    Dots Enamel Necklace – a single colour from the Arctic, on a fine silver chain.

    Dots have been my signature collection since 2009. The necklace is the quietest of the three – one Dot, one colour, one chain – and it is the piece I most often see worn every day, year-round.

    Painted in glass, by hand

    The enamel is finely ground glass with metal oxides for colour. I mix it with water and paint it onto the silver with a small brush, then fire it in the kiln until the glass fuses to the metal. Most pieces pass through the kiln more than once, with a fresh layer of enamel each time.

    Each colour has its own temperament in the fire – its own melting point, its own ideal time. The line between a finished piece and a melted lump of silver is hair-thin. Finding it takes years of practice and a lot of failed pieces.

    I work almost only with transparent enamels, sourced from the long-established makers in Germany and Japan. Transparent enamel lets light reach the silver beneath, giving the colour a quiet depth that opaque pigments cannot reach. This is real vitreous enamel – fused glass – not the cold-set epoxy or lacquer often sold under the same name.

    Inspired by northern light and arctic water

    The colours come from the place I live and work: the long blue of winter, the green of summer water, the warm reds of late light over the mountains. Once fired into glass, they will not fade or change.

    Made to be worn, every day

    The colour is fired into the surface. It will not fade, scratch off, or dull with time. Dots are comfortable for all-day wear and look especially at home with a wool sweater and a hat — which, where I live, is most of the year. A small note: enamel is glass. It will outlast you around your neck, but if it lands on a stone floor, it can chip. Treat it like the small piece of glass it is.
